CIOmove 2021

CIOmove 2021: Check out the German Carmakers

Cloud and platform strategies using the example of German carmakers are the main topic of CIOmove 2021. From July 8 to 11, the CIOs of Daimler, Porsche and Audi will be speaking to us. The trip from Stuttgart to Heilbronn follows strict Corona requirements. Large parts of the CIOmove will take place outdoors.

Contrary to what was announced, we are not going to Moscow this year. Quarantine requirements and travel restrictions of the CIOs force us to postpone the CIOmove@Moscow once again. But we’ve made substitutions that will make it easy and safe for many CIOmovers to attend. Here’s the program in a nutshell:

Thursday, July 8:

From 5 p.m. we meet in front of the Mercedes Benz Museum. There we will test for Corona for the first time. Whoever has a negative test result (after about 15 minutes) may enter the museum.

At 7 p.m. we will be in the restaurant “Bertha’s”, where Jan Brecht, CIO of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz, welcomes us. Daimler lives the convergence of IT and OT. Jan has just signed a strategic partnership with an Indian provider, in order to benefit from the scaling effects and innovative performance in the fields of networks, data centers etc. and to concentrate Daimler’s internal IT skills on software development and thus strengthen Daimler in the digital competition. Jan can also report on Daimler’s first 5G campus.

Shuttles will take us to the Hotel Nestor in Ludwigsburg after dinner.

Friday, July 9:

From 09:30 a.m. we are at Porsche Digital in Ludwigsburg. Again, we will be testing on Corona. Similar procedure: While waiting for the negative test result (about 15 minutes), participants can already have a coffee and marvel at a few cars in the yard. Inside, there will be more non-digital products, including Porsche’s e-bikes.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., Mattias Ulbrich, CIO of Porsche, will speak about his platform strategy and the industrial cloud, explain the tasks of the new digital offshoot and the search for new business models. Stefan Zerweck, COO of Porsche Digital, will present an example for a new digital product.

From 12:00 a.m., we continue on bicycles. We will cycle along the Neckar River to Marbach (11 kilometers) or, for the more athletic, to Besigheim (+27 kilometers). If the fresh air becomes too much for you on the way, you can change to shuttles that will take us to the Parkhotel Heilbronn.

From 6:30 p.m. there will be another chance to get into the program: Our mobile hygiene team will be testing at the “Alte Reederei” on the Neckar River in Heilbronn, where the evening program with food, drinks and music will also start.

Shuttles will take us to the Parkhotel after the evening program. Those who like to stay longer at the Neckar can also walk the way home. The path (1.9 km) leads mostly along the river.

Saturday, July 10:

From 9:30 a.m. Last chance to get into the program: We will test once again at the Bildungscampus Heilbronn. The Schwarz Foundation has located several outstanding educational institutions there. CIOmovers already know two of them: TU Munich and l’École42 from Paris.

Newcomers to the program meet in front of the “Campus Founders,” Bildungscampus 1, 74076 Heilbronn.

10:30 a.m. Warm Welcome on the Education Campus. Prof. Reinhold R. Geilsdörfer from the Schwarz Foundation and Prof. Helmut Krcmar from the Technical University of Munich talk about regional development through educational ecosystems.

11:00 a.m.  Goals of the “Automotive Alliance. Alexander Buresch, CIO of BMW, Stephan Brand, CDO of Bosch Mobility Solutions and Jürgen Sturm, CIO of ZF, will discuss:

  1. unified data in the automotive industry,
  2. more resilience in the automotive supply chain and
  3. resilient tracking of CO2 targets at the component level.

Alexander, Stephan and Jürgen also make a powerful commitment to GAIA-X, the Franco-German initiative for more IT sovereignty in Europe. The three co-initiators of the Automotive Alliance emphasize that the success of their open network depends on the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

11:45 a.m. Topic pitches part 1. As always at a CIOmove, participants propose their own topics for the group discussions. CIOs and partners will kick things off: the first three topics are those proposed by the Automotive Alliance (see above) Others will follow by July. After the short presentations, participants indicate in our voting tool which topics they would like to discuss in more depth.

12:30 -14 p.m. Lunch

02:00 p.m. Topic pitches part 2. Now it’s the turn of the “MIMIs”: students from the TUM Master in Management and Innovation program will present the future topics they think CIOs should talk about. All MIMIs already have professional experience and know the Innovator’s Dilemma.

15:00 p.m. First group discussion, Topics by MIMIs. In small groups of up to five people (Corona edition), CIOs and partners discuss with students.

16:15 p.m. Second group discussion, Topics by CIOs and Partners

Our voting tool best matches these small groups based on preferences and availability. Again, this year the number of participants is limited to five per group.

At 18:00 p.m., our guided tour will begin through the botanical orchards and continue through the vineyards to Wartberg Mountain. From here we have a view over the whole of Heilbronn and the surrounding vineyards. For our evening program outdoors, we set up tents and ensure the necessary distance between all guests here as well.

Shuttles will take us back to the Parkhotel after the evening program.

Sunday, July 11:

We start at 10:30 a.m. at the “Bildungscampus”: located in the heart of Heilbronn, the educational campus links more than 10 facilities and institutions that work together to meet the learning needs of different target groups.

Starting at 11:00 a.m., Audi will have its hour: CIO Frank Loydl will talk about his favourite topic, how Audi is developing more software itself again. Ivan Jukic, CIO at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant, will report on the transformation taking place five kilometers to the north – and what role AWS and Azure are playing in it.

Sebastian Grams, the new Managing Director of Audi Sport, may also be allowed to speak, perhaps still known to many as CIO of SEAT, which he was until March. At Audi Sport in the nearby Böllinger Höfe, the R8 and the E-Tron GT are built on the same assembly line. Grams may tell us how the coexistence of combustion and e-motors works in a factory – but only if he brings a few of his sweethearts with him, see below.

At 12:30 p.m., Prof. Helmut Krcmar reports on the latest research results from the Technical University of Munich on platform economics.

From 1:15 p.m., there will be lunch at the “Bildungscampus”.

Between 2 and 4 p.m., shuttles will take us back to Stuttgart or Frankfurt Airport.
