Double Feature: CIOmove@Otto and Kuehne+Nagel on September 18, 2024

Office with a View: Kuehne & Nagel in Hamburg. (c) Kuehne & Nagel

In fact, it’s a triple feature: We invite you to join us on September 18, 2024, first at the Otto Group and then at Kühne+Nagel – both in Hamburg. The following day, the NEXT Conference will take place, also in Hamburg, organized by Faktor 3 Live.

But first things first:

We start with Otto Group

On September 18, we will visit one of the world’s largest retail and service companies, the Otto Group. CIOmover MüWü (see photo) and Chief AI Officer Timo Christophersen will tell us about Otto’s specific experiences with AI.

The Otto Group was an early adopter of AI and introduced GenAI applications before the hype around generative AI really took hold. This started with an organizational restructuring: This included the appointment of the aforementioned Chief AI Officer (CAIO) Timo Christophersen and the widespread use of Microsoft Copilot. The company’s 26,000 employees in the DACH region also benefit from its own chatbot, OGgpt. In addition to the pure chat function, employees can upload their own documents or entire “knowledge bases” and then “interact” with them via the new AI assistant, for example by asking questions about the content.

Together with MüWü and Timo, we want to discuss the Otto Group’s experiences with generative AI: What are the dos and don’ts, what are the next steps? And how does Otto IT deal with the high expectations of AI from the business?

Second stop: Kühne+Nagel

In the afternoon, CIOmove@Home moves on to one of the world’s largest logistics and freight transportation companies, Kühne+Nagel (K+N). Originally based in Bremen, but now headquartered in Switzerland, we’ll meet with Kühne+Nagel CIO Martin Kolbe (see photo) at the company’s Hamburg office in the Hafencity.

K+N will also talk about AI, but the focus of our visit will be to discuss the logistics company’s overarching and long-term IT strategy, which is derived from its corporate goals. To this end, K+N has formulated a “Vision 2030” in which IT plays one of two main roles. IT-based logistics is thus firmly anchored in the company’s strategy until 2030.

During our visit to K+N, we will focus on the following questions How can business goals be translated into an IT strategy? How can long-term planning parameters be transferred to IT? What are the concrete cornerstones of K+N’s IT strategy? What is the role of offshoring and nearshoring?

We will get an insight into the entire digital ecosystem of Kuehne+Nagel, the elements of the strategy – platforms, development centers, standards – and the most important core strategies – data, security, platform business. At K+N, as I said, it will also be about AI: What potential does AI offer in logistics, but also in the back office, which plans and controls the entire distribution processes? What cloud models and integration platforms are emerging for AI? And what is the relationship between the company’s future projects and the legacy IT that still provides – and should provide – its services?

This is the provisional agenda:

  • 10.30 am: Welcome to OTTO
  • 11.00 am to 1.00 pm: Keynote speeches and discussion
  • 1.15 to 2.00 pm: Lunch
  • 2.00 pm: Transfer to K+N
  • 2.30 pm: Keynote speeches and discussion at K+N
  • 5.30 pm: Grand harbour tour and transfer to dinner on the only ship owned by K+N, a historic barge called NAKU
  • 7.00 pm: Dinner at 100/200 with open end and together with NEXTMinds
